Obama supports Freedmen in dispute with Cherokee Nation
The Freedmen have a right to belong to the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, the Obama administration said in a court filing. The Freedmen, who are the descendants of former slaves, are entitled to citizenship and other tribal rights under an 1866 treaty, government attorneys wrote in a motion for summary judgement

I believe this is a reversal from his previous position. The Congressional Black Caucus wanted to cut funding to tribes in Oklahoma for the Freedman Controversy but Obama cited tribal sovereignty and blocked them. I can really see both sides of this issue from the perspective of the federal government but I can only hope the Cherokee et al. see the light of reason and accept the Freedmen back into their nations.
